On a clear day in the Liaohe River Estuary National Reserve, a baby Saunder's gull is lying in the nest, hidden in grass, in a bad mood, as its parents are enjoying the lush seafood of the wetland while it was left at home. But the good weather and a red-crowned crane inspire it to take an adventure of going out alone.
The Liaohe River Estuary National Nature Reserve sits in the coastal area of Panjin City in northeast China's Liaoning Province. Sediment-laden water from the Liaohe River empties into Liaodong Bay there, and the deposits form distinctive estuary mudflats endowed with remarkable biodiversity. The wetlands here are comprised of reed marshes, rivers and mudflats. They're the breeding ground and wintering habitat for many rare bird species, and they're also a way station for many migratory birds.
